The History of Sleeping Storm Dojo and its founder William Tanikie

The first Sleeping Storm Dojo was opened on 30 April 1995 in the Court Recreation Grounds in Epsom, Surrey. The Dojo was a collaboration between Epsom & Ewell Council and William Tanikie. The Dojo was set up to try and include the anti-social minority and get the young children who hung around in the park involved with sport and martial arts. The dojo quickly became a focal point for the local community and transformed the park for the local residents. The effect on the Park was immediate with a large drop in crime, nuisance issues, litter and vandalism. The police could allocate their time and resources far more effectively. Recognition for the success of the Dojo came in 1999 when the Sleeping Storm Dojo was provided with an Award for Crime Prevention from the local council and the Police.

In 2002 William Tanikie and Edward Semple decided to set up a new Sleeping Storm Dojo. The aim of the centre was to set up a Dojo that was central to the local community, a place of learning where everyone was welcome irrespective of age, gender, race, religion or ability. This principle makes Sleeping Storm Dojo unique and exciting as all martial arts are welcome and there is therefore such a tremendous range of different arts for people to practice and learn. The important community work first started in the Dojo in the Park has continued with Sleeping Storm Dojo now teaching Personal Safety or Martial Arts in 25 local schools.

Sleeping Storm has come a long way since the opening of the park Dojo in 1995. Sadly in 2004 William Tanikie lost his battle against a long illness and passed away. Sleeping Storm is a living reminder of the man and his dream of a Dojo where all arts, people and students are truly equal. May he rest in peace.
